The Republic of Yemen is a hot and dry country that was formed in 1990 when the two countries of South Yemen and North Yemen merged. There are a few fertile areas in the land where crops like coffee, cotton and qat are grown. The last named is a plant whose leaves contain a mild narcotic. Qat chewing is one of the favourite pastimes of the Yemenis and many other Arabs.
The port of Aden which has an oil-refinery is Yemen's economic centre, while the capital is San'a.
The country has a population of about 16 million.
