Kiribati

The Day Begins Here.
33 small islands scattered over a vast area in the southwest Pacific Ocean form the country of Kiribati (pronounced KIH-rih-bahss).
Formerly the country was spread out on both sides of the International Dateline. Recently, the government shifted the dateline so that the entire country lies to its west. Being the first country to the west of the dateline, Kiribati is ahead of the rest of the world, timewise.
Travellers say the islanders themselves are among the least time-conscious people in the world. There is no hustle or bustle in their lives and if they wear a watch it is only for its decorative value.
Fruits and vegetables do not grow easily on the islands which are mostly soilless coral atolls. But coconut trees abound and copra is the main export.
The capital is Bairaki on Tarawa Atoll.
