Sao Tomé e Principe is a small island country, west of the African mainland.
lt consists of two main islands and several smaller ones, all volcanic, fertile and thickly forested. But the total land area of the country is less than 1000 sq km, which makes it smaller than India's capital, Delhi.
The city of Sao Tomé lsland is the capital and largest city.
Portuguese is the most widely spoken language. This is because the country was ruled by Portugal until 1975 when it gained its independence. An African language called Fang is also spoken by a section of the population.
ln August 1996 the military overthrew the elected civilian government and seized power.
