Malta is an archipelago—a group of islands, the largest being Malta, Gozo and Comino. The total area of the country is 320 square kilometres.
Malta was ruled by Britain until 1964 when it became an independent constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. In 1971 the Maltese severed all ties with Britain and Malta became a fully independent republic.
The major industries of this tiny European country are tourism, ship repairs and construction. The capital is Valletta.
Malta was devastated during WWII when German and Italian planes bombed it relentlessly. The entire population was awarded the George Cross for bravery, the first time the medal was given to an entire country instead of an individual.
