In 1493 the savage inhabitants of the island of Antigua in the Caribbean Sea watched in awe as Christopher Columbus and his men landed on one of their beaches.
Antigua and the neighbouring islands of Barbuda and Redonda were later colonised by the British who established sugar plantations and brought in African slaves to do the work.
The British left in 1981, handing over charge to the descendants of the former slaves, and the islands became a nation, the State of Antigua and Barbuda.
Sugar and Cotton are the major exports and tourism is an important source of revenue.
