The land-locked country of Chad in north-central Africa is almost as large as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra put together, but it has a population of only about 6.5 million.
Chad was ruled by France from 1920 and became independent in 1960.
The northern part of the country is mostly desert. Most of the people live in the fertile southern part. Civil war between the poorly educated northerners, most of whom are Muslims, and the southerners, most of whom are Christians or members of native religions, since the mid-1960s, has devastated the country and hampered its development. Chad, today, is one of the world's poorest countries.
Most of the people earn their living either through agriculture or by raising and selling sheep, cattle and camels.
Cotton and meat are the main exports.
The capital and largest city is N' Djamena.
