Mauritania in western Africa is about the size of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan put together, but has a population of less than 3 million, most of whom are Arabic-speaking Moors. Black Africans form a large minority.
Nearly half the country is desert. Most of the people live in the southern part of the country where there is enough rainfall to support farming and agriculture, the mainstay of the economy.
Low literacy and bad roads and communications network are hampering the development of the country.
Exports include gum arabic, livestock and iron ore. Formerly a French overseas territory, Mauritania became independent on 28 November 1960.
