The Grenadines are a chain of small islands stretching for about 97 kilometres across the Caribbean Sea.
The southern islands of the Grenadines, together with the mountainous, thickly-forested island of Grenada, form the country of Grenada, independent from Britain since 1974.
The tiny nation has an area of just 340 square kilometres and a population of about a lakh.
As there are hardly any industries in Grenada, jobs are scarce and wages are low.
The country is a leading producer of nutmeg and the spice called mace. Cocoa, bananas and sugarcane are also exported.
Tourism is a growing industry.
The largest city and the capital of the country is St. George's.
