Botswana is an arid land with the Kalahari desert extending into the western part of the country. So rain, which is called pula, is very important to the people here. When they shout out a greeting it includes the word pula. Pula is also the unit of their currency. The blue in their flag represents the life-giving waters of pula. Most Batswana (that is what the people of the country are called) are farmers and herders of cattle. Botswana is Africa’s largest exporter of meat and meat products. It is also the world’s largest producer of diamonds. It also mines gold and soda ash. Its herds of wild game draw tourists from far and near.
So despite being arid and landlocked, Botswana has done quite well for itself economically and is one of the more prosperous and politically-stable countries of Africa.
Its capital Gaborone was established in 1965, a year before Botswana got its independence from Britain.
