40 per cent of the country's population is of Indian origin. Most of them are descendants of labourers taken to the islands to work on sugar plantations in the last century. They replaced Africans who refused to work in the fields once slavery was abolished in 1834.
The islands still export sugar but now the country is tapping its petroleum and gas deposits and its economy is based on oil.
The nation is made up of two large islands — Trinidad and Tobago — and 21 smaller ones and is situated near the northeast coast of South America in the Caribbean Sea.
Port-of-Spain is the capital and largest city.
