Costa Rica

Costa Rica, which is about the size of the State of Punjab, is a mountainous country in Central America.
It has a population of around 3.5 million.
Early Spanish explorers were misled into thinking that the country was rich in gold deposits and other precious metals, so they named the region Costa Rica which means 'rich coast'.
Costa Rica in fact has few mineral resources. The people here have turned to agriculture and cattle rearing and done well for themselves.
Coffee is the main export, followed by bananas, cocoa, sugar and beef.
Literacy is high (94 per cent) and the people have a higher standard of living than the people of most of the other six countries of Central America.
The capital and largest city is San Jose.
