Niger, not to be confused with its better known and more prosperous neighbour, Nigeria, is a landlocked country in west Africa.
It is as large as Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat put together but has a population of only about 8 million.
The north is dry and mountainous; the south, watered by Africa's third largest river, the Niger, is comparatively fertile and the population is concentrated here.
Farming and herding are the main occupations.
Niger is the leading producer and exporter of uraniun in the world, but it does not have many other natural resources.
Niamey is the capital and largest city.
