The Rumble of thunder on its coastal mountains sounded like the roaring of a lion to early Portuguese explorers and they gave this country on the West African coast the name, Sierra Leone, 'Mountain of the Lion'.
Sierra Leone is smaller than the state of Assam and has a population of less than 5 million.
Its flag shows green, white and blue stripes. The green represents its agricultural economy. Most of the people work on small family farms. In the dry months, many men abandon their farms and go to work at diamond sites. The country is a leading producer of diamonds in the world. Bauxite, which is used to make aluminium, is another of its mineral exports.
Sierra Leone was ruled by the British until 1961 when it got its independence.
The capital and only large town is Freetown which was established in 1787 as a settlement for freed American slaves.
