Qatar is a small, thumb-shaped Arab country that sticks out of the southwest Asian peninsula into the Persian Gulf. It was a little- heard- of country, whose people tended camel herds, fished, or dived for pearls for a living, till oil was struck in the 1930s. The country today ranks among the richest countries with a high per capita income. Its economy depends mainly on oil and petroleum. The world's largest natural gas fields are found off Qatar's shores.
Qatar, which was formerly a British protectorate, became an independent state in 1971 with Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad al-Thani as the Emir. The present Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani came to power in 1995 after ousting his father.
In spite of being a stony desert country with a few barren salt flats in the south, Qatar produces sufficient vegetables for its people. Meat and other food and almost all manufactured goods, however, are imported. As the country receives only a little rain, there is very little natural water. Drinking water is supplied through desalination plants which distil sea water.
Ninety per cent of the Qataris live in the capital city, Doha, which is the largest city and the chief port. It is also the country's administrative and financial centre.
