The Central African Republic came into prominence in 1976 when the president, Jean Bedel Bokassa crowned himself emperor in a lavish ceremony that cost millions of dollars. The name of the country was changed to Central African Empire.
When he was ousted in 1979 the country reverted to its original name and sank into obscurity once again.
This landlocked nation in the centre of Africa is almost double the size of Maharashtra but has a population of less than four million, most of which is made up of small farmers. There are very few industries and the country remains one of the least developed in Africa despite having natural resources like diamonds, uranium, gold and oil. Political instability is one of the main reasons for its slow development.
The capital and largest city is Bangui, which is a river port.
