Mozambique on the southeast coast of Africa is bigger than Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan put together but has a population of only about 19 million.
It was a colony of Portugal for several centuries, until June 1975, when it became independent and a communist government took over.
Marxism has given way to multi-party democracy, but despite being rich in agricultural lands and mineral resources, Mozambique remains one of the world's poorest countries.
Recently, the country was ravaged by floods, the worst ever in living memory, making the hapless nation even more dependent on foreign aid.
Mozambique's chief exports are prawns, cashew nuts, sugar and cotton.
