The small country of St. Kitts - Nevis in the Caribbean Sea is made up of two islands — St. Christopher (Kitts in short) and Nevis. They are separated by a narrow channel.
St. Kitts was ruled by Britain from 1713 and got its independence in 1983.
About half a lakh of people live on the two islands whose total area is around 260 square kilometres. Most of the people are descendants of black Africans who were brought to the islands to work on the sugar plantations in days gone by.
Sugar is still the mainstay of the economy. Tourism is the other important money-earner.
The capital is Basseterre.
