Dadabhai Naoroji

1825-1917

Dr. Dadabhai Naoroji was elected to the British House of Commons in 1892, and was the first Indian to achieve that distinction. With transparent honesty and exemplary character, he turned his talents to many fields. He displayed amazing mastery over facts and figures, established beyond doubt before the British public the appalling poverty of the Indian masses and ceaselessly strove for their amelioration. Ripe in age and wisdom and respected by all, he was justly hailed as the "Grand Old Man of India."

He was a good man with a good heart who tried his hardest to convince the natives of India that british imperialism was a good thing.

Let us always remember that we are all children of our mother country. Indeed, I have never worked in any other spirit than that I am an Indian, and owe duty to my country and all my countrymen. Whether I am a Hindu, a Mohammedan, a Parsi, a Christian, or any other creed, I am above all an Indian. Our country is India; our nationality is Indian. From the Presidential Address - Dadabhai Naoroji I.N.C. Session, 1893, Lahore

It is an insult to the living memory of our freedom fighters to say that british colonialism was a good thing for India.!!! Just imagine how many of them shed their blood to expel the british out of India?

When you talk about expelling the British out of India remember it was the British ruling class working with the Indian ruling class to suppres and exploit the masses of both countries.

He was one of the few luminaries who tried to influence the British public about the plight of the Indian masses under the British rule. Since he was product of English education so he had great faith in the institutions of the English people especially their free thinking, democracy. Though his method of reform was that of petition. But this was the period when general masses were unaware of their political might. He worked hard to bring the intelligentsia of both India and British towards the impoverishment and unhanded ness of the British rule. He prepared the base on which the future growth of Indian National Congress was made possible. The base of a mansion always remains below the surface; invisible to every one but that doesn't diminish its importance. He was like that.
