Jawaharlal Nehru

1889–1964

An irrepressible freedom-fighter, Bharat Ratna Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru is sure to live in history for generations to come as the man who shaped the destiny of independent India. As an unchallenged leader of the masses and spokesman of India, he was a true successor of
Gandhiji. He had the distinction for being the Prime Minister for an uninterrupted period of over 17 years, the longest in the history of any democratic country. The Nehru family has the unique distinction of having provided for the top echelon of the national leadership for four successive generations: Jawaharlal's father, Sri Motilal Nehru, was the leader of the Swaraj Party, the parliamentary wing of the Congress, in the 1930s; his daughter, Smt. Indira Gandhi was India's Prime Minister, his grandson, Rajiv Gandhi, was the Prime Minister during 1984–89.
