Subramania Bharati

1882-1921

Twentieth century Tamil literature has been described as the Age of Subramania Bharati, an Agastya-incarnate, who not only gave life to
Tamil language and literature, but also laid the foundation of modern Tamil renaissance. He served Mother India through Mother Tamil and identified himself with these two non-dual divinities. A staunch and fiery patriot he had to face externment from British India. Composer of soul-stirring national songs, he is one of India's greatest Bards of Freedom.

Sri Gandhiji was once in Madras. Subramania Bharati met him and requested him to preside over a public meeting in the Marina beach popularly known as Thilakar Kattam. Gandhiji replied that he had prior engagements for the day and suggested whether he could hold the meeting the next day. Subramania Bharati told that he would have the meeting on that day only and hastily left. Observing this, Gandhiji advised his colleages to preserve such great patriots, full of freedom fire.

Subramanya Bharathi was financially poor in his life time but was very rich in his mentalities. We all know he was a great poet. If he got some good items immediately he gave it to others who were economically and financially very weaker than him. His high principle was that if we give something to others wholeheartedly, god will take care of us. All must follow his ideal thinking and lead a happy and simple life.

Gandhiji once said that if he had seen bharathi 5 years before he would have got freedom by now.
