Vinoba Bhave

1894-1982

One of the closest associates of Gandhiji, Acharya Vinoba Bhave achieved wonders in his Bhoodan, Sampatidan, and Jeevandan campaigns—known as the Sarvodaya movement — in pursuit of which he had by Padayatra covered every part of India. This wandering minstrel came to limelight when he was chosen by Gandhiji as the first individual Satyagrahi during World War II to vindicate India's inalienable right to free speach. Sri Jayaprakash Narayan, pioneer of the socialist movement in India and leader of the underground forces during the famous "quit India" struggle of 1942 was his foremost disciple. After Gandhiji, the Indian people looked to Vinobaji as the "Moral Tribune" of the nation.

I am very surprised and somewhat disappointed not to see Rabindranath Tagore in your list. We owe to him for our National Anthem. I would have thought that alone would have guaranteed a place for this great man in your list.

My father late c.srinivasa rao worked in the Sarvodaya Office at Gandhi Bhavan,Hyderabad when I was school student. From 1960 I moved closely with Prabhakarji at Shivarampally, Ranga Reddy District.A.P. I visited Sevagram and Pawnar Ashrams, Acharya Vinoba Bhave was man of Will Power , his words are like Shruthi Vedas slokas, one feel to realise the importance of his dictum and jump into action and complete. Acharya Vinoba Bhave's motivation Sarvodaya Patra and Bhoodan movement receiving the donation and distribution the same to the land less poor. As long as this allotment of land poor was honest and sincere the Bhoodan movement was praised and respected by every body. After the demise of Acharya Vinoba Bhave in A.P. Bhoodan Movement fell on side track. I do not know who is responsible.

My father is direct disciple of Vinoba Bhave. We have a lot of collection of his photos in my home town in which you can find the devotion of this purest heart.

There is a story of vinobaji that when was travelling on account of some work he had to stay in a school. The school surroundings gave a very bad smell. When he investigated he found that there was a lot of human excreata all over the place. He called the children and asked who cleans the place. The children said it was the servant. Then vinobaji asked them who makes this place dirty. Nobody answered. Then he explained that there is nothing good or bad, all work is good.

My older brother Radhakrishna was a devoted follower and associate of Vinoba Bhave. I remember Acharya Bhave coming to Bangalore as part of the Bhoodan movement in the late 50's. My brother went on many trips with him. From my perspective, Acharya Bhave gave a brilliant interpretaion of Bhagavad Gita originally given in Marathi in a prison during the early 40's. The materials were gathered and translated into English. I have a copy of the book I cherish.

I have joined the sarvodaya from last 2 years. I feel so many changes in myself after seeing the living life of gandhiji and vinobaji. Vinobaji was a man of god to give a message of humanity and to teach a human the way of living. I am very Impressed by Vinobaji's living style and at present in the ashram the sisters living very simple way in the surronding of god nature, so simple and truthful. I have also read the geeta. It inspired me lot of sometimes. I love Vinobaji.
