Chittaranjan Das |
1870 – 1925
|
Patriot, lawyer and parliamentarian, Chittaranjan Das is better known by the appellation "Deshabandhu", Friend of the Country. He was the Guru of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. He became the first elected Mayor of the Calcutta Corporation in 1924 (Swaraj Party) under whom Netaji worked as the Commissioner. Deshabandhu wanted Swaraj for the masses, not for the classes. He believed in non-violent and constitutional methods for the realisation of the
national independence. In the economic field, Das stressed the need for constructive work in villages. He was a champion of national education and vernacular medium. He also made his mark as a poet and an essayist. He supported women's education, widow re-marriage and intercaste marriages. |

An excellent site about the Great Men of India. I am grateful to you for the journey through our great people's lives. Recently I was trying to build an album of great men and kings of India as a Summer project work for my son, who is studying in IVth Standard in Abu Dhabi. I collected as much as important pictures and information from your site. Thanks to you. I look forward more and more sites valuable for the younger generation who are living far away from India. I am looking for information regarding the Habitats of India - Flowers and animals. Could you please guide me with your valuable suggession? I definitely look forward to it.
Once again you deserve a big applause and Congratulation for the best of the best work done. Wishing you to come forward with wonderful sites in future. God bless! Uma Subu - Abu Dhabi.

In my schooldays in early mid fifties I read a touching poem, a sonnet penned by him: Wipe tears from your eyes, this world is not just for your crying...you must eliminate the distress of the masses, just cover your face with a smile and forget your own sorrows..." One day a poor Brahmin came to ask for help to get his daughter married, he gave away the entire amount of Rs.500 that he had earned from his law practice. His wife Basanti Devi asked what they would eat for that night, since there was no money to buy them food that day. He replied"Today we shall eat the big smile that we saw on that poor Brahmin`s face. He died almost without treatment since he refused to take any help from the Congress Fund which he had built up with every paisa that he had earned. We need a hundred such Deshbandhus today.

Had there been no Deshbandhu, Netaji would not have come in the struggle of independence.

C R Das was so affluent and successful a Barrister that his clothes used to come cleaned from France and every two hours he used to change is clothes. During the Freedom Movement he donated everything he had and took to the life of almost a hermit and dressed in khadi only. He defended Sri Aurobindo in the Maniktola VBomb case falsely implicating Sri Arobindo in it and told Sir Ilaija Impey the then Chief Justice of India sitting over trial of Sri Aurobindo that Sri Aurobindo was destined to create history and he was trying the student who used to stand first in his class and he used to come second!
