Hailed by the people of India as "Lokmanya," Bal Gangadhar Tilak was probably the most learned among the country's political leaders. He believed in the heritage of Hinduism, and revived public celebration of Ganesh and other festivals. With characteristic vigour, he addressed himself to the awakening of the masses, clearing the ground for Gandhiji. Tilak boldly led the first phase of nationalism. He was the author of the famous Mantra, "Swaraj is my birth-right and I will have it."

Tilak,popularly known as Lokmanya, was born in 1856 in Maharashtra. He was born lawyer by profession and believed that education could bring about a social change in India. He started two papers- the Kesari and the Maratha-in order to spread the idea of nationalism, courage and self-defence for the freedom of the country. He celebrated ganapati festival and honoured Shivaji to spread the spirit of nationalism. His ideas and ideals infused a new spirit of militant nationalism in the congress. |

Lokmanya Bala Gangadhar Tilak's fiery writings in the "Kesari" invited the wrath of the British Government. He was tried for sedition in 1897 and was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment. But this could not stifle his indomitable spirit and he went on writing in "Kesari". His articles during May-June, 1908 again brought him in conflict with the Government and he was again tried in 1908. This is the historic trial, the proceedings of which are placed for the first time since independence before the people through this book. |

Had he not joined & led the freedom struggle so ably he would have easily excelled as a scholar in such diverse fields as indology, astronomy, maths, law, history&journalism. Rightly called as father of Indian unrest he showed great political wisdom & foresight while making rapport with the newly founded British Labour Party during his stay in England. Between 1914 & 1920 he was without doubt the topmost leader of the Congress party & the common people. |
