Jayaprakash Narayan

1902 – 1979

'A patriot with a brilliant record of great deeds and great sacrifices' – this sums up the life and work of Jayaprakash Narayan. A leader with a political vision and an economic ideology, Jayaprakash Narayan was in the front-rank of the fighters in the freedom's battle. Yet, when freedom came, he chose to stay away from the centres of power and more than once declined offers of high office in Government. Preferring to be the Lok Nayak, he rose to his full stature during the dark days of the Emergency of 1975–77. He mobilised the masses to action and brought leaders with disparate ideological bases to a common platform to fight the authoritarian trends in Indian polity. He was largely instrumental in bringing about a radical change in the life and outlook of the dacoits of the Chambal Valley in Madhya Pradesh. He became one of the ardent followers of Acharya Vinoba Bhave, the Saint of Paunar.

From the bed time stories I heard from my father, I understand Jayaprakash was made up of very strong will. To get certain details from him he was made to sit on an iceblock continuously by the britishers, and then questioned regarding his involvement in freedom strugle. Many such stories were heard about him wherein he showed his courage and strong will and above all his deep patriotism towards our mother country.

I was kind of hoping to get more information on J.P. Narayan. In 1978, I was a student in the university; Indira Gandhi's emergency rule had started in 75 and Narayan was mobilising the youth of India to get out of colleges and take charge of their country and future. I remember how upset I had been with that youth movement as colleges and universities shut down and final exams were postponed. Today, I wonder what was right? His fight as a leader to protect our rights or my emotions as a student -interested only in getting a good education? May be you children can help me think straight!

Jayprakash ji was a brillient student, did his M.S. from California, USA. I met him in 1977 at Amausi Airport, Lucknow, among other things he gave emphasis on "People not to surround the so-called Netas 'cause those Netas then think they themselves are no less than God, thus when elected, they behave like Kings. Keeping themselves away from the people. He ws the last leader to unite the entire opposition parties in India. But Political parties could not strict to his idea for selfish gains and that being the greatest loss of India.
