Dayananda Saraswati |
1824-1883
|
Swami Dayananda Saraswati regarded rationalism as the only means to arrive at the final goal of life. He used to deliver lectures in Sanskrit, but when it proved unintelligible to the masses, he switched over to Hindi, thus anticipating the advocates of Rashtrabhastha by seventy or more years. He wrote a commentary on the Vedas in Hindi. Like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, he advocated a non-idolatrous monotheism and social reform. He was the founder of the Arya Samaj (1875) and the author of Satyartha Prakasha, (Vision Truth), the "Bible" of the Arya Samajists. |

Did you know that Dayananda Saraswati was born at a time when British rule in India was becoming increasingly strained. This influenced many of his beliefs, such as the rejection of Western ideology and the belief that in order to reform the Hindu religion all you had to do was to look back to what he called the "Golden Age" of Hinduism, namely the Vedic era of early day Hinduism. The Vedas are where he justified many of his ideas and indeed he believed that all you needed to achieve Moksha was the Veda. However his radical ideas (such as the rejection of idol worship and the caste system) eventually got him poisoned.
However he was a peoples man, a person of action who practiced what he preached and he set up many educational facilities through his Arya Samaj organisation which were aimed at the lowest castes, particularly women.

He was the first religious reformer of modern India who out of his own curiosity had delved deep into the scriptures to find the true interpretations. He was born in 1825 in a well-to-do Audichya Brahmin family at Tankara in Morvi state in Kathiawar. He learnt a lot from the blind Swami Vriganand of Mathura who changed his name to Dayananda Sarawathi after Diksha.
His ideas and preachings were far from the narrow confinement of religion alone. He was a great social reformer. He championed for the emancipation of women, widow remarriage, abolition of caste systems, child marriage, polytheism, doctrine of incarnation, untouchability, idol-worship and was against salvations by observing fasts, etc.

I compliment you on the great kind of job that you have done for spreading historical knowledge. It is important to say that we come closer to the history that we may be aware of.
I suggest that you spread more of such a kind of knowledge to those who are unaware of our history.

It is not enough to call him GREAT. The Vedas compiled by Swami Dayananda Saraswati is a monumental work for a similar work Max Mueller devoted 45 years of his life . Arya Samaj has breathed in new vigour in the Indian Society and contributed immensely to the cause of the Perrennial Religion (Sanatana Dharma). It is hard to believe that one man could achieve so much in one life.

Such a great scholar as Swami Dayanand to have such a magnanimity of heart to establish the generous and open-minded liberal ideology as that of the ARYA SAMAJ established by him is mind-boggling indeed. We need hundreds of such noble souls to rediscover and rebuild India. Glory to Swami Dayanandji.
