Sarojini Naidu

1879-1949

Poetess, orator and freedom-fighter Smt. Sarojini Naidu was acclaimed as, the "Nightingale of India." She was a close associate of Gandhiji almost from the earliest days of the latter's public life in India and accompanied him when he went to London to attend the Round Table Conference. She plunged whole-heartedly into every one of Gandhiji's movements and suffered imprisonment many times. The President of the 40th session of Congress, held at Kanpur in 1925, she was for several years a member of its Working Committee, and later governor of U.P. She was a passionate champion of Hindu-Muslim unity.
