The British Government in India paid heavily for dismissing Sir Surendra Nath from the Indian Civil Service on the most flimsy grounds. It proved to be a great gain to the then nascent Indian nationalism. "Surrender-not", as he came to be known, he laid the foundations of Indian unity and nationalism. His great oratory attracted large crowds all over India and merged the people into the stream of Indian politics. He was truly the father of Indian Liberalism.

Banerjee died in 1925. He is remembered and widely respected today as a pioneer leader of Indian politics - first treading the path for Indian political empowerment. He published an important book, A Nation In Making which was widely acclaimed. |

In 1957 I was in Class VII in Rajarhat Shiksha Niketan,(Estd.1954!) North 24 Parganas. I then memorised a beautiful and memorable sentence from the Rapid Reader Book that we had in which Sir Surendra Nath Banerjee`s speech in a quotation appeared: as follows: OUR YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN, trained in Schools and Colleges, must come up in thousands to start their night schools and adult education Centres where these unfortunate fellowmen of ours should get their first training in reading and writing." Has any one of our leaders heeded such calls? |
