His Highness Maharaja Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad-III of Baroda was one of the progressive ruling Princes of India. The social and educational reforms introduced by him anticipated by many years similar enactments in free India such as compulsory education for boys and girls, chain of village libraries, village panchayats, co-operative movement, agricultural education, and suppression of early marriage and other social evils. At the Delhi Durbar in 1911, he alone manfully turned around instead of stepping back from the British Emperor's presence. He had the gift of discovering talent and encouraging it, one notable instance being that of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, whom he sent abroad for higher studies.

During his rule of 58 years Baroda progressed on all fronts& became matter of envy of even to british rulers. One only wishes we get a ruler like him in future. |
