The seeds of the redwood tree are so tiny that there are 246,000 to a kilogram but they produce the tallest living things on earth. Redwood trees reach heights of over 110 metres. The tallest of them 'Tallest Tree' in Humboldt County, California is 112.1 m tall and has a girth of 13.38 m.
An armour of bark 15 to 20 cm thick protects the tree against insects and fires. This natural protection coupled with great resistance to disease makes the trees extremely long-lived and many of them attain ages of 2000 years.
Redwoods belong to the group of trees known as Conifers. Like other conifers their leaves are thin and needle-like and usually stay on the tree all the year round.
