The Great Barrier Reef which stretches for 2000 km. along the northeast coast of Australia and which can be seen even from the moon looks like a vast accumulation of sharp rocks. But the reef, in fact, is made of the fused skeletons of billions of tiny sea creatures called coral polyps.
It has been estimated that the reef took 12-15 million years to form. It is the largest structure ever made by any living creature, including man.
