Tsunamis, sometimes called tidal waves (though they have nothing to do with tides) are caused by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions beneath the sea. A tsunami flashes through the ocean at jet-speed in the form of low waves but when it approaches land it rises to a great height and hits with stunning force causing enormous damage.
The largest known tsunami rose to an estimated height of 85 metres!
