Ludwig II ascended the throne of Bavaria in 1864. By that time the days of castles and knights were over but Ludwig developed a passion for building castles and palaces. He spent so much time and money on his projects that his ministers declared him mad and removed him from power.
The fairy-tale palace Neuschwanstein Castle perched on top of a hill was 'mad' King Ludwig's most extravagant folly. Today it is Bavaria's chief attraction and draws tourists from all over the world.
