The statue of Bahubali also known as Gommateshwara or Gommata is world famous. According to Jain tradition, Bahubali fought and defeated his brother, King Bharata. Then overcome by remorse he gave away the kingdom to his brother and walked away to the forest where he did penance and attained salvation.
In 981 A.D. a nobleman named Chavundaraya had the idol of Bahubali carved out of a single rock at Shravana Belagola in Karnataka.
The idol, 17 m in height is bathed every twelve years in a ceremony known as "Mahamastakabhisheka".
