The Most Famous Midget

The world's most famous midget was Charles Stratton. He was 5 years old and just 0.6m tall when he came to the attention of the great American showman Phineas T. Barnum in 1842. Barnum renamed the midget 'General Tom Thumb' and exhibited him in America and Europe.
Tom Thumb delighted audiences wherever he went and he made a fortune for himself and Barnum. Though small (he finally reached the height of 1.01m) he was like all midgets and unlike dwarfs normally proportioned. He married another midget, Lavinia Warren and the two lived happily for twenty years until Tom Thumb's death in 1883 at the age of 45.
