Sphinxes were mythological creatures. They had the body of a lion, the tail of a serpent and a human face; sometimes wings too. The ancient Egyptians constructed stone sphinxes near cemeteries to protect the tombs from intruders. The oldest known sphinx statue is the one that stands guard near the approaches of the three large pyramids of Giza, 15 km west of Cairo.
It is about 5000 years old! The Great Sphinx as it is known, is carved out of rock and is 20 m high and 73 m long. It is falling to pieces but now efforts are being made to save the ancient monument.
