The giant statues of Easter Island, a speck of land in the southeastern Pacific have mystified scholars ever since they were discovered about three centuries ago.
There are about 1000 of these stone statues scattered over the island. Many weigh as much as 20 tonnes. The largest is 9.5 m. tall and weighs 90 tonnes!
Why the islanders should have spent so much time carving these gigantic statues (each must’ve taken them months to complete) remains a mystery.
Nobody as yet knows when the statues were carved or whom they represent though some scholars are of the opinion that they are images of chiefs or religious leaders.

Dimdima is the Sanskrit word for ‘drumbeat’. In olden days, victory in battle was heralded by the beat of drums or any important news to be conveyed to the people used to be accompanied with drumbeats.
