Most of us have seen ant hills. If you sit on one accidentally you get bitten by the angry ants! In northern Australia however there are ant hills which you could never sit on accidentally: they are 3.6 - 6 m high and about 3 m in diameter. In the region between Mount Isa and Darwin there are thousands of these rock-like spires making the spot a great tourist attraction. What is amazing about these huge structures is that they are built by colonies of frail and almost blind termites each no bigger than a grain of rice!

Dimdima is the Sanskrit word for ‘drumbeat’. In olden days, victory in battle was heralded by the beat of drums or any important news to be conveyed to the people used to be accompanied with drumbeats.
