Big Ben is one of the most famous bells in the world. It is housed in the clock tower of the British Houses of Parliament in London and rings out the hour chimes. (The clock is also sometimes called Big Ben but the name really belongs to the bell).
Why is the bell known as Big Ben? Nobody is sure. Some say it is named after Sir Benjamin Hall who supervised the hanging of the bell about a hundred and thirty years ago, others say it was named after a boxer, Big Ben who was a heroic figure in his day. The bell weighs over 13 tonnes.
