Jammu & Kashmir The state of Jammu and Kashmir is often called A Paradise on Earth because of its great beauty.

Area: 2,22,236 sq km
Population : 1,00,69,917.
Languages Spoken : Urdu, Kashmiri, Dogri, Pahari, Gujri, Dardi and Ladakhi. The official language is Urdu.
Capital : Srinagar is the state's summer capital and Jammu is its winter capital.

Location :
Jammu and Kashmir is our northernmost state.

Physiography :
The state has three distinct regions : The Valley of Kashmir, Jammu and the cold desert region, Ladakh.

Major Rivers :
Indus, Jhelum,Chenab, Ravi and Beas.

State Records :
Gulmarg, in Kashmir has the world's highest natural golf course (2890 m high).
The Khardung-la, in Ladakh, is the highest motorable road in the country (altitude : 5,500 m).
Lake Wular in the Kashmir valley is our largest, natural freshwater lake. The Kashmir valley is South Asia's only producer of saffron.
The Verinag spring, a source of the river Jhelum, is one of the largest springs in the country.
The Jawahar tunnel on the highway between Jammu and Kashmir, is the longest in Asia.

Other Places of Interest :
Kargil and Dras (the coldest place after Siberia during winter) are strategic towns that lie close to the Line of Control.
Pahalgam or the Village of Shepherds is the starting point of the famous Amarnath 'yatra'.

In the 12th century, a scholar and poet named Kalhana began writing the history of Kashmir. He wrote in verse and in Sanskrit to produce the work called Rajatarangini which means 'River of Kings'.
