TALES FROM READERS

Every Tiger Has It's Day

There was a little tigress named Tigress who lived in a jungle with her twin brother Tiger and beautiful mother Sherni. Since Tigress and Tiger were very small they could not hunt. Sherni hunted and brought back them food.
Tigress and Tiger had joined the jungle-school where Hati and Buffalo studied too. The two animals would show off by displaying their muscles and laugh at Tigress's and Tiger's lanky limbs.
One morning, when Tigress and Tiger went to the lake to take bath, Tigress asked Sherni, "Why are we so small? Hati and Buffalo always laugh at us."
Sherni laughed and said, "When you grow up, everyone will be afraid of you. You needn't worry about your size."
But Tigress wasn't convinced. Sherni did not like to see her two cubs look sad and so she decided to teach them hunting. The tiger cubs found this more interesting than their boring school work.
Their first prey was a field mouse. Sherni watched with pride as her cubs jumped and caught it with ease. Tigress however let go of the catch. When Sherni asked her why she had done it, Tigress replied, "I took pity on the poor animal."
Years passed. Tigress and Tiger have grown big but they are still not as big as Hati and Buffalo. Tigress can never forget the sorrow of being small compared to her big friends. Sherni has grown old and is suffering from high cholesterol and does not hunt anymore. Tiger hunts and feeds Sherni. Tigress meanwhile has become the doctor of the jungle and has turned vegetarian. Sherni doesn't approve of it and hence she quibbles with her daughter.
One day Buffalo gets caught by a team of hunters, who have made their base a two kilometers away. The hunters have been catching animals every day and putting them away in cages.
Tiger and Tigress called for a meeting of animals to discuss ways to free the captured animals. They plan to attack the hunters at their base soon after dark.
The mouse is given the job of cutting the ropes with which the captive animals were tied. One by one the animals are set free. The animals wait in the dark silently for the hunters to finish their dinner and go to sleep. But chimpanzee, unable to keep silent after the excitement of being free again, chatters aloud. The hunters come out of the tents with their guns. They are angry and fire the guns arbitrarily. One bullet hits buffalo in the leg. He can't walk. So he urges Tigress and Tiger to leave without him. But knowing that they wouldn't be able to look Sherni in the eye if they did this, Tigress stepped out in the light and roared loudly. Seeing her all the hunters get scared. Tiger gets encouraged when he sees how the deadly human beings though armed with fire weapons were afraid of Tigress's roar. So he also joins his sister and together they scare away the hunters. Then they carry Buffalo to their den, where Tigress treats Buffalo with her medicines.
The whole jungle is proud of their bravery and decides to honour them by making them the rulers of the jungles.
