A Night of fun in the Desert Village

One late afternoon, Bhura the camel was sitting on the sand and chewing leaves. There was little grass around him.
Bhura lived in a small village, by the desert.
A little later Bhura’s friends, Goti, the goat and Bholi, the donkey, came and sat with him.
“It gets quite boring around here,” Goti said yawning.
“Why, look at the shining sand. It is so beautiful,” Bhura said taking a mouthful of grass and chewing happily.
“Hey, Come on”. Bholi said, “for how long can you look at shiny sand?”
“You are right,” Bhura replied in a lazy voice, “Nothing exciting happens in the village. We just eat, work and sleep. That’s all.”
They did not know that there was a lot of excitement in store for them.
At night the three friends dozed off by the side of the mud wall .
Suddenly, Bhura heard a sound and he opened his eyes. He saw something black moving around.
“Hey Goti, Bholi wake up,” Bhura whispered, “see what
it is.”
Both opened their eyes and looked.
“We cannot see its face!” Goti said, looking at the moving thing.
“Is it a human being or an animal?” Bholi asked,
They carefully moved towards the creature.
“Look”.Bholi pointed out. And they saw a long black tail.
“Ah, so this is Bawla.” Bhura said.
Bawla, the black-faced, long-tailed langoor was very mischievous. But he would never get caught as he was very quick and would climb up trees before anybody could catch him.
“Let’s follow him and see what he is up to,” Bhura said.
So keeping a safe distance, the three friends followed him.
Bawla went under a tree, which was away from the lamp post and hence, quite dark. He spread the black cloth, with which he had covered himself and leaving it there he slipped into a hut through the window.
Few minutes later, he came out, holding a banana in each hand. He ate one and put the other on the cloth that he had spread.
Then he went into another hut. Soon he came out carrying two apples - he ate one and put the other on the cloth.
The three friends saw him eating the fruits and the vegetables..
“Hmmm, “ Bhura said, his eyes shining, “ This fellow plays mischief and always gets away. This time let’s turn the table on him.”
“Oh, yes , yes.” Both Bholi and Goti said together. “ Lets do that, but how?”
“Here is the plan,” Bhura said. And explained the plan to them.
As soon as Bawla slipped through the window into a hut, the three friends ran and took all the fruits and the vegetables lying on the cloth.
They hid the goodies in a small pit, which Bhura had dug in the sandy ground that afternoon, to keep himself cool.
Then they gathered a lot of sand and put it on the cloth.
Giggling, they quickly hid themselves behind the trees waiting for Bawla.
Soon Bawla came out of the hut.
His stomach full, he was now almost rolling instead of walking. He came under the tree and without looking, made a bundle of the cloth. The bundle was very heavy.
The langoor dragged it feeling very happy.
Lugging the heavy load, Bawla climbed the tree, puffing and panting and sweating. He very carefully put the bundle against a thick branch.
The three friends quickly came and stood a little distance away from the tree, watching him.
Bawla, with a big grin started untying the bundle. And as soon as he opened the bundle a shower of sand went down the branches of the tree. It looked like a heavy rain of sand falling through the branches and the leaves.
The expression on Bawla’s face was so comical that the three friends rolled on the ground with laughter.
Bawla was still shaking the cloth, hoping that fruits and vegetables would fall He was jumping from branch to branch shaking the cloth vigorously and rubbing it with all his strength.
“Ha..ha..ho…ho…ho.” The three friends laughed, covering their mouths.
Bawla then waved the cloth in the air, stretched it from end to end. After that he squeezed it.
Then he climbed down the tree. He spread the cloth on the ground and yelled at it, “You thief, you have eaten my goodies.” And taking a long stick, started beating the cloth.
Watching all this, the three friends continued to laugh.
Since they were at a distance, Bawla did not see them. Also in his anger he was neither thinking nor seeing anything.
“Tomorrow”, Bhura said, ``we will ask Bawla how his fruits and vegetables turned into sand. Ha,..ha.ha…ho..ho”
“Y…Y…Yes, “ Goti said, her jaws aching with laughter “tonight let him spend time thinking about it.”
And laughing heartily, the three of them went to the small, sandy pit where they had kept the fruits and the vegetables.
“We can return these if we knew from which huts these have been taken.” Bholi said. “ But we don’t know. So what should we do?”
“I think we should share this with other animals of the village in the morning and some we can eat tonight.” Bhura said . “Yes, that’s right. We can eat some and share the rest,” Goti said.
So, sitting on the sparkling sand, under the shiny moon, the three friends had a wonderful midnight party.
