TALES FROM READERS

Roll Model

Wood Ramu, the lazy woodcutter was very possessive about his axe.
He never allowed anyone to touch his axe.
So he was forced to cut the woods by himself.
That was all he did. Rest of the works was all assigned to his assistant Lean Thama.
On their way Wood Ramu would enter the village temple to pray.
"Please show me a way to live happily without hard working".
What else a lazy fellow would ask!.
Everyday he repeated the same prayer.
Lean Thama never entered the temple to pray. He had no such demands.
He knew just praying to the god won't help. Hard work is the right way to get things done.
Buy an axe for self and become a woodcutter, was his only ambition.
Once they reach the forest, Wood Thama won't cut the best woods available.
Good woods are very hard. So he would look for the decayed one, which is easier to cut.
That was why in the market his woods always had less demand.
One day while cutting the woods, a lion appeared chasing a buffalo.
Immediately both climbed up on a big tree. Finally the lion killed it and started eating. Once its stomach was full it left the remains there and disappeared in to the forest. Suddenly a fox came out of the forest and started eating the rest.
"See how fox is getting his food. No hunting, no hard work. Still he gets his portion. The God is great" Wood Ramu said to himself.
"Fox, You are my roll model", said Wood Thama. "No more wood cutting, No more hard work. God will take care of me."
"I don't want this anymore. Take it" he told Lean Thama, handed over his axe to him and walked away.
Lean Thama was very thrilled.
He cut some very good wood and took it to the market.
It happened so that the Minister was there in the market to look out for a man to supply good woods to the palace regularly.
He liked the quality of Lean Thama's woods and assigned the work to him.
Lean Thama got a handsome amount as advance too.
"It is all because of Wood Ramu only. Had he not given his axe...", Lean Thama started thinking. On his way home he entered Wood Ramu's house and gave him a portion of the money. Wood Thama was very happy to get the money. "Thank God, Your help started coming. And thanks to my Roll Model Fox for showing me the right way", Wood Ramu said.
Lean Thama worked hard and earned quiet a good sum everyday. He made arrangements near the temple to give free food to the poor villages every day. Wood Ramu made it a point to eat from this place and thanked god for taking care of him. He became more and more lazy.
Days passed and one day Lean Thama came to Wood Ramu's house to invite him to attend his house warming ceremony. "God is great. Here comes my food for tomorrow" he thought. Very next day wood Ramu reached Lean Thama's new house. He was so surprised to see the big house Lean Thama has managed to build. He also realized how rich Lean Thama has become. He was very envious. Ungrateful God, he thought and went straight to the village temple.
"I did pooja at home and also visited the temple daily. Lean Thama never did a pooja and never entered the temple to pray. Still you gave him the big share and I got a small share! God, You are ungrateful." He complained to the god.
Suddenly he heard a voice coming from nowhere.
"Ramu, I know you came everyday to the temple to pray, but Lean Thama was feeding the starving villagers including you. His action is more powerful than your chanting of the mantras. "
"But on that day in the forest you showed me the way how you take care of the fox. So I took the fox as my roll model." Ramu tried to argue.
"Right. That lion and fox incident was to show you the right way." The voice said. "You took the fox as the roll model, where I wanted you to take the lion as the roll model. Fortunately Lean Thama picked it correctly ".
Wood Ramu realized his mistake and became a very hard working woodcutter.
