Bombay Blood group

What is Bombay Blood group?

The protein from which all Blood groups are formed is called ‘H Antigen’. Bombay Blood group is an extremely rare blood type in which the affected individuals have an ‘H Antigen’ deficiency. The blood group is termed as ‘Oh’ which means absence of ‘H’. This rare condition that occurs in one out of 10,000 individuals in India, and in one in a million people in Europe was first reported by Dr.Y.M. Bhende in 1952 in a patient at a Bombay (now Mumbai) hospital, hence its name.
