Everyday we confront an ugly sight. Empty plastic bags strewn all over the place. Well, hope is at hand. A waste management group collects these plastic bags. Then these are properly washed and dried. Finally the clean bags go through a presser. Out come plastic sheets! These are cut, lined with cloth and converted into handy lady bags, wallets, tablemats and other household items. Our ‘kabariwallas’ and ragpickers shout “HURRAY!” They get good money for useless, dirty trash!
Plastic waste is soon be put into our roads. Bangalore is the first Indian city to use waste plastic to strengthen roads. Shredded plastic is mixed with bitumen. This makes the road water proof and more elastic. Technology has since advanced. Powdered plastic is now used. It easily blends with bitumen. Road tensile strength shoots up. Only 8% plastic is added. Roads crack if mix is stiff and ‘bleed’ if too soft. Finally there is a way to ‘bury’ that non- degradable plastic!
