The laughter workout

How many times did you laugh today? Have you ever wondered what makes you laugh? In the entire animal kingdom, only we humans are capable of laughter. On an average, we laugh about 17 times a day.

Laughter is a spontaneous reaction of the body to something funny or pleasant. Have you noticed that when you laugh, so many parts of your body respond? The face changes expression, a loud laughter affects our breathing pattern, the muscles of our arms, legs and trunk.

Laughter is contagious. There is an interesting story, which dates back to 1962. In a school in Tanganayika in Africa, a group of schoolgirls started laughing uncontrollably over a joke. This laughter reached epidemic proportions, jumping from one person to the next, spreading across communities and lasting for six months!!!!So severe was the "laughter epidemic" that schools had to shut down till the epidemic subsided.

The exact mechanism of how we laugh remains a mystery. Whatever be the reasons, laughter, as the saying goes, "is the best medicine". In fact, it has been proven scientifically, that being happy and laughing not only keeps us healthy and fit but also helps cope with serious illnesses, and helps in healing.

Laughing exercises all the important muscles in your body and keeps you fit. Now people have started forming laughter clubs that promote laughter as a "therapy". They, meet at specific places at a fixed time every morning, and laugh together to start off a healthy day. As laughter is contagious, this exercise programme best works in groups, once one person starts laughing, the others automatically join with out any effort.
