AN INDIAN FESTIVAL

By Pranav Dharangaonkar (V C)

India is a ‘land of festivals’

Many festivals are celebrated in India of which Diwali, Holi and Ganesh Chaturthi are the most popular ones. Janmashtami is also celebrated on a grand scale. It is Lord Krishna’s birthday and is celebrated in the month of Bhadrapad. It is marked with great joy and enthusiasm in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. Lord Krishna was the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu.
Janmashtami is celebrated all over India with great devotion and happiness. Devotees observe a fast on this day and make different types of sweets from milk, coconut and dry fruits. The temples are decorated on this occasion with pictures depicting scenes of Krishna’s birth, his transfer to Gokul and his childhood pranks. An idol of Krishna as a baby is kept in a cradle, and the devotees take turns pulling its string to rock. In Maharashtra, Dahi Handi event is organized. Youngmen and boys form a human pyramid and try to break earthen pots full of curd or butter suspended in the sky between houses. At the stroke of midnight hour devotees break their fast by consuming prasad. This community fest inculcates a spirit of unity and harmony among people.
