Winnie the Pooh

Author - Alan Alexander Milne

He wrote just four books for children, but they have made him world-famous. British author Alan Alexander Milne or A.A.Milne was in fact, upset that he was branded a ‘children’s writer’ because he wanted to be known as a ‘writer’. He started his writing career with a job as assistant editor of Punch, the classic British humour magazine. He was there for eight years. During the First World War, he began writing plays which were successfully staged both in London and in New York. After the war, Milne married and had a son, an event that changed his life forever.
When Christopher Robin was three, on a rainy holidays in Wales, Milne started work on a collection of poems for children. When We Were Very Young was published in 1924. It featured a stuffed bear and his friends, the idea for which came to Milne from a collection of toys that his son had. It became so popular that in 1926, Milne brought out Winnie-the-Pooh. This was followed by The House at Pooh Corner. The final book was again one of poems — Now We Are Six. The stories describe the adventures of Christopher Robin and his animal pals — besides Pooh Bear, there is Piglet, Eeyore an old Donkey, Roo the Kangaroo and Tigger, a bouncy tiger. Milne was now acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic. So was the illustrator of his books, Ernest Shepard, Milne’s colleague at Punch.
Winnie the Pooh ranks as one of the most beloved and enduring characters of children’s literature. So popular did he become that in 1947, the entire menagerie of toys travelled to America, but not before they were insured for half a million dollars! Diehard fans trekked miles to see Pooh, inspiring the organisers of the tour ot declare Pooh a U.S. citizen. Today, Winnie-the-Pooh is featured on a range of merchandise, has starred in videos, on radio and on stage and his birthday is celebrated by school children around the world.
