Chicken Soup For The Kid’s Soul

Author - Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Patty Hansen, Irene Dunlap

101 Stories of Courage, Hope and Laughter

When someone puts this book into your hands (it is almost certain that you would not pick up a book that is 398 pages long, by yourselves) you will probably read the title and sigh. It sounds like a preachy, boring, ‘good’ book that parents and librarians generally recommend. But after you have read a story or two you’ll realize it is entertaining. It is indeed nourishing- in a way that you’ll love. And you won’t want to put it down.
Chicken Soup for the Kid’s Soul is a great book for kids between 9 and 13 years. It consists of 101 individual pieces - stories, anecdotes, poems and cartoons- on subjects that concern children of this age. Though some pieces are written by well-known adults like Shaquille O’Neal and Roald Dahl, most of the book is written by kids themselves. The stories are placed in convenient sections titled Love, Family, Friendship, Achieving Dreams, Death and Dying, etc. So you can read a story from any section of your choice. And the longest stories are only three or four pages long.
Some stories like ‘Goat’s Tobacco’ make you laugh. Some are sure to make you cry. Some might make you feel as if you were reading your own experiences. Others describe situations that you might never imagine that a child of your age would face. Many show how you can make a difference even if you are little. Read how children have dealt with success, physical disability, illness, divorce of parents, and death of loved ones. Find out how they coped with people making fun of them because they were fat or thin, dark or different. Some are stories of extraordinary courage. They are all authentic and extremely readable.
Chicken Soup for the Kid’s Soul can build your self-confidence. It can give you a better understanding of people. It can make you more determined to go for your dreams. You will feel like a better person for reading the book. And isn’t this just what a great book does? Older kids and adults can enjoy the book too. If someone has not given you the book yet, just go and find it!
Chicken Soup for the Soul is a very popular series. The first book was published in 1993. A serving specially for kids was published in 1998. There are other books in the series for preteens (9-13 years) and teenagers. There are Chicken Soup books for the Parent’s soul, Sportsperson’s soul, Writer’s Soul, Pet-lover’s soul, and many many more. Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen, who put the series together, are best-selling authors and motivational speakers. They have trained thousands of people on improving their self-esteem and performance.

Excerpt from ‘From the Heart’: Jimmy was five when his parents adopted Neil. Neil grew up thinking that being ‘adocted’ was the coolest thing. .. He’d proudly stand up and tell the immediate world how he had a ‘tummy mom’ and a ‘heart mom’.
One day, a schoolmate tells Neil that ‘adopted’ means “your real mother threw you in the garbage, and someone came along and got you out”. Neil is devastated.
At home, Jimmy ‘walked around the table to where Neil was sobbing with his head in his hands.
“Neil,” he said quietly, “just think about what’s true. Babies aren’t adopted because nobody cares about them. Babies are only adopted when they are loved. Very much.” Neil picked up his head. Some people say the truth hurts. But sometimes it cures, when it comes from the heart.
