THE OLD LADY AND THE DOCTOR

By Safiya M. Jariwala (VI)

Once there lived an old lady, who had lost her sight. She wanted to be cure of her blindness. She went to a doctor. After examining her eyes, the doctor said, “I shall cure your blindness.” She told the doctor ““I shall pay your fee only if my blindness is completely cured. But, if you fail to cure me I shall pay you nothing.” The doctor agreed. The doctor called her to his house daily and started his treatment. One day, the doctor went to the lady’s house. He saw her beautiful furniture and was tempted to steal it. Every day he would go to her house and steal some of her furniture. He delayed the treatment till he had stolen most of her furniture. At last the doctor cured her of her blindness. It was then that the doctor asked for his fee. The old lady said, “I won’t pay you your fees.” The puzzled doctor asked her for the reason. The old lady replied,“ the treatment is not complete.” The doctor filed a suit against her. In the court the judge studied the case and asked the old lady “Why did you refuse to pay the doctor his fee?” The lady replied, “Sir because my sight has not been completely restored as I cannot see all furniture.” The judge understood the case and took a decision in favour of the old lady. The doctor was not only asked to return the old lady’s furniture, which he had taken, but also to forfeit his fees.

Moral – Dishonesty will be paid for.
