HINDUISM-A WAY OF LIFE

By Sukanya M. Prabhudesai (VI)

Hinduism is the major religion of India and the official religion of Nepal. It is one of the oldest living religions in the world. The word Hindu is of ancient Persian origin. It came from the river Indus called Sindhu in Sanskrit. Many Hindus themselves call their faith Santana Dharma, meaning the eternal or ancient religion. Hinduism was not founded on the teachings of one person. It developed gradually over thousands of years.
Where did it begin-Hinduism evolved in India.
Some main beliefs – Hinduism includes the Varna-Ashrama-Dharma. Most Hindus believe in a supreme spirit, called Brahman, and in the reincarnation of a person’s atman or soul. (release from the cycle of birth and rebirth), and ultimate union with Brahman or God.
